PARKWAY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PARENT INVOLVEMENT POLICY
2009-2010
Parkway Elementary School and staff in partnership with parents and families will promote strong parent involvement both at home and at school.
- Parent involvement activities will include opportunities for parents to:
- Volunteer and participate in school activities
- Provide home support for their student’s education
- Communicate effectively with the school
- Participate in curriculum training and parent education
The school will:
- Implement the parent involvement policy
- Make the policy available to the community at our annual Title I meeting in October and online through the school website as well as in the school office.
- Involve parents in the planning, review and improvement of the policy at least annually by inviting them to take part in developing the Plan for Continuous Improvement.
- Involve parents along with staff in the National Network of Partnership Schools (NNPS) training, writing, and implementation of the School, Family, and Community action plan. This plan which is directly aligned with and in support of the Plan for Continuous Improvement (PCI) will outline activities and events the school will provide for parents so the goals stated in the PCI will be met.
- Host an annual meeting during Open House in September to inform parents of their school’s participation in Title I and its requirements
- Implement a Parent Partner half-day staff position to partner with and support Parkway families and work with the community to increase student achievement.
Title I Programs and Plans:
- Parents will be provided with the results of their child’s performance as described by VBCPS Grading and Reporting Student Progress guidelines to assess and measure student progress. Methods will include:
- Weekly/Quarterly Progress Reports
- Quarterly Report Cards
- Parent/Teacher Conferences
- Standardized Assessment Results
- Teacher Phone Calls/Letters/ E-mails
- Graded Papers/Communicator Envelopes
- Parent Portal (available to Parkway parents in mid-February)
- Each parent is provided with a Parent/Student Course Information guide for each grade to provide insight into VBCPS instructional program and learning expectations. Parents can also review the curriculum on-line or at the school.
- If the Title I plan is not satisfactory to the parents, any parent comments will be submitted in writing, to the Title I Coordinator when the plan is completed.
- Each parent will have the opportunity to complete a parent interest survey in October so that the school may better meet the needs of Parkway ES families.
- If requested by parents we will provide opportunities for regular meetings of parents and school personnel where parents may offer suggestions and ask questions regarding Title I policies and programs.
- Administrators will respond to parents’ suggestions/concerns in a timely manner.
- The school will collaborate with community agencies and businesses to provide activities that encourage and support parent participation in the education of their student.

1 Compact
School, Teacher, Parent/Guardian, and Student
One of the requirements applicable to schools receiving Title I funds
is that of promoting shared responsibilities of parents and educators for
high student performance. Accordingly, the following compact between
the school and parents describes the mutual responsibilities for supporting
students’ attainment of high academic achievement.
Responsibilities of School and Teachers:
- Provide high quality curriculum and instruction including appropriate
interventions and remediation
- Provide instruction in a supportive and safe environment conducive to
learning
- Schedule and conduct regular parent-teacher conferences/meetings and
be available to meet
with parents/guardians when needed
- Establish and maintain effective communications with parents and guardians
Responsibilities of Parent/Guardians:
- Play an active role in your child’s education, expressing high
expectations and offering praise and encouragement; read with your child
and help with homework assignments
- Monitor your child’s attendance, participation in out-of-school
activities, and homework, ensuring that schoolwork has the top priority
- Participate in school parent involvement activities as often as possible
and request parent-teacher conference when needed
- Communicate with school administration and teachers when requested
Responsibilities of Student:
- Attend school daily and be ready to learn
- Complete all class work and homework assignments on time
- Respect your classmates, teachers, and obey classroom and school rules
- Be a good messenger between home and school
